The orangey-red accents seem almost an afterthought in the photos, but in reality they're just obvious enough to give the watch a sporty look without going overboard. The black (non-rotating) bezel, the accent ring underneath and the steel of the bracelet contrast superbly against each other, while the part-brushed, part-polished steel links give the bracelet a sporty, yet classy, look.

Even at night the watch looks great, because while you may not be able to its face, you'll definitely see the lume on the markers, which is thick, easy to read in the dark and responds well to light. Unfortunately, while the white, skeletal hands are clear enough during the day, they're not so clear at night when their minimalist nature, and with it the lack of much lume coating, doesn't make them stand out quite as brightly as the markers do.

And although it looks pretty, the standard of the bracelet doesn't quite match that of the watch itself. The bracelet is quite light when measured against the overall weight of the watch, and the clasp has a `tinny' sound to it when tapped. This lack of weight is quite noticeable when you're out and about, as the bracelet has a tendency to rattle as you move your wrist, especially around the clasp. As if to reinforce that belief, the bracelet on mine was scratched after only a single day's (very careful) use, and the clasp was marked a couple of days after that. It should also be noted that the bracelet clasp has only a single catch, activated by pressing two side buttons, so I have concerns that it may come undone by accident.

The lack of any sub-dials makes the face less `busy', but it also means that the hands have to work overtime and that only a few pieces of information can be displayed at any one time. Instead, behind the watch's face is a circular disc that Casio calls the `Mode Disk', which rotates as different functions are selected to display different information in two separate windows on the watch's face. The angular window on the left-hand side displays the current mode and the current state of that mode, while the round window on the right-hand side shows the current state of the stopwatch - off, on or split. It's a pretty thing, to be sure, and watching the disk spin to your whims is quite fun, but it doesn't quite compare to a full set of sub-dials for convenience.

As well as those on the Mode Disk, the watch uses various small markers dotted around the face to display information about the currently selected function. While these are fairly easy to see in good light, their visibility diminishes as the light fades, especially if your eyes aren't that great. Not, then, the best watch for those with less than stellar eyesight.

The EQW-A1000DB has five basic functions - time, world time, stopwatch, countdown and alarm; not exactly the embarrassment of riches you get with many Casio timepieces but more than you get with most ordinary analogue watches. There's also a semi-hidden `stopwatch lap' mode for recording lap times, which is only accessible by holding down one of the watch buttons. It's a variant of the normal stopwatch mode so doesn't get its own indicator on the Mode Disk, instead having 5 small `lap' indicators that show the number of lapsed laps.

The functions are selected with the lock-down, push-button crown, using Casio's "Smart Access" system, which moves the hands using separate motors, so they move quickly and smoothly when switching between functions. Each press of the crown cycles through the different functions, and although the crown is a bit easy to press by accident (even against the back of your hand as you bend your wrist), pressing and holding the crown returns the watch to the timekeeping mode.

In addition to the basic functions, the watch is also solar-powered and calibrates itself from an atomic signal up to 6 times a day (depending on reception.) There is no power level display as such, simply an indication that the levels are dropping by the second hand moving at two-second intervals. As for the calibration, I initially had problems getting the watch to sync with the atomic signal, but this is a problem many of my home self-calibrating clocks have and is down to the poor signal in parts of my home. Nicely, though, I left the watch on the dresser before bed and it synched at some point over the night.

The manual is as thick as one of Shakespeare's greater works and somewhat daunting when you first look at it, until you realise that it's as thick as it is to cater for various other languages as well as English. Even if you take out those languages, the manual is still quite a tome, and written using a font of a size somewhere between miniscule and minute. My advice is to download a pdf version of the manual from the Casio Europe website and to refer to this instead.

Once you get past the flood of information the manual gives (much of it informative but unnecessary), the watch is actually pretty easy to use, assisted somewhat by Casio helpfully placing marks on the back of the watch case that tell you what each button does. Not exactly the height of sophistication, but useful nonetheless.

I looked at numerous watches, mainly others in the Edifice line, before making a decision, but to me the EQW-A1000DB stood out as the best compromise between functionality and appearance. The lack of sub-dials may not be to everyone's taste, but the watch still manages to give you just the right amount of information without compromising the look. The bracelet really could do with being upgraded for one that does the rest of the watch justice, and the small markers are perhaps a bit too small, but those really are the only faults that I could find with it. The EQW-A1000DB is arguably the pick of the current Edifice line in my opinion.
